Sublocade® (Monthly Buprenorphine Injection)
What does it do?
What is the goal of treatment?
To provide stable, safer, and healthier living with fewer cravings. Moving to a monthly injection also means you no longer have a daily dose to remember, manage, or carry with you. Furthermore, recent Canadian clinical research shows that the steady, high-occupancy receptor levels provided by Sublocade significantly block the effects of external opioids, lowering the risk of an accidental overdose even if a patient uses fentanyl.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects include constipation, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and increased liver enzymes. You may also experience temporary pain, redness, or a small lump at the injection site—it is important not to rub or massage the area. Just like other treatments, combining Sublocade with alcohol or sedatives increases the risk of dangerous drowsiness and slowed breathing.
How long does it last?
Each injection provides a stable block of medication that lasts for about one month (28 to 30 days). Because it builds up a steady reservoir in your body, keeping your appointments is important; if you are more than about two weeks late for your scheduled injection, you may need to go back to daily Suboxone for a brief period before safely restarting the shot. Treatment continues for as long as it is helping you.
