Methadone is a long-acting opioid medication used to treat opioid dependence. Methadone maintenance treatment prevents withdrawal and reduces or eliminates drug cravings and difficult physical withdrawal symptoms.

What does Methadone look like?
Pure Methadone is a white crystal powder that’s usually dissolved in an orange-flavoured drink and swallowed once a day. Initially, you will drink the medication at the pharmacy but as your treatment progresses you may be able to take your daily drink at home.
Is Methadone safe in pregnancy?
Pregnant women who are addicted to opioids are able to use methadone. By combining your Methadone treatment with regular prenatal care, you’ll increase the chances of having a healthy child. There are no known long-term effects of Methadone on the baby.
How does methadone make you feel?
Our patients in treatment tell us that being on Methadone makes them feel so normal that they can work, go to school and care for families without difficulty. Once your dose is adjusted properly, no one will be able to tell you are taking Methadone.
What are the side effects?
Some people experience mild side effects such as sweating and constipation but your physician will help you manage any problems.
How long does Methadone last?
A single dose of Methadone can eliminate withdrawal symptoms for 24 hours. When it’s time to finish your treatment, the Methadone dose will be tapered gradually to prevent withdrawal.
If Methadone is stopped abruptly, you may experience symptoms such as sweats, stomach cramps, diarrhea and body aches lasting for several days. We’ll help you cope until they subside.
Is Methadone dangerous?
When Methadone is taken as prescribed, it is very safe; however, it is a powerful drug and can be extremely dangerous for those who do not take it regularly. Even a small amount may be fatal for a child. For this reason, the dispensing of Methadone is carefully monitored and controlled.
Is Methadone addictive?
People in Methadone treatment do become tolerant to certain effects of the drug and will experience withdrawal if they don’t take their regular dose. It’s important to remember, however, that addiction is an uncontrollable dependency which is very different from the stability of a methadone maintenance program.
What are the long-term effects of methadone?
Methadone maintenance is a long-term treatment that is medically safe and effective for opioid dependence. It has been used successfully for over forty years and no long-term effects are known.
